Transition Year

The Department guidelines for Transition Year states as its mission "to promote the personal, social and vocational development of pupils and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society"

The Transition Year Programme aims to promote the personal, social, educational and vocational development of pupils and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society.

Transition Year is designed as a bridging year between the junior cycle, which is very much dependant on teacher led learning and the senior cycle which involves much more independent, self-directed learning.

What a student gets out of Transition Year depends hugely on the attitude or approach they take to the programme and what they put into it.

“You reap what you sow”

Statistically students at St. Mogue’s College have gained up to 120 additional points in Leaving Cert as a result of completing Transition Year.

Since its introduction in 2008 the Transition Year Programme has proven to be an outstanding success.  Students have the opportunity to sample a wide range of curricular options, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, external programmes and projects.

In addition to influencing subject choice and ultimately career choice, Transition Year is proven to enhance academic performance in the Leaving Certificate.
